La Fortuna and the Arenal Volcano region sit at the center of one of Costa Rica’s most biodiverse areas. Because of this, the region combines an active volcano, cloud forest, and lowland rainforest in one place.
As a result, wildlife thrives here. Wave Expeditions runs small-group wildlife tours led by local experts who know exactly where to go.
Whether you want to spot sloths, explore jungle waterways, or do both, this region gives you the best opportunities.

Sloth Tours in La Fortuna
La Fortuna offers one of the best chances to see sloths in Costa Rica. In particular, forests near Arenal Volcano National Park and nearby river corridors provide ideal habitats.
Because our guides know the terrain, they take you directly to the areas where sightings happen most often.
During the tour, you walk through the rainforest with a naturalist guide. At the same time, your guide uses a spotting scope so you can observe sloths up close without disturbing them.
In addition, you may see howler monkeys, white-faced capuchins, poison dart frogs, and tropical birds. In fact, the Arenal region hosts more than 500 bird species.
Tours run all year. However, early morning tours offer the best experience. At that time, wildlife is more active, and the trails stay quieter.

Wildlife Safari by Boat on the Peñas Blancas River
The Peñas Blancas River offers a completely different wildlife experience one where the jungle comes to you. On a guided safari boat tour, you’ll drift slowly through pristine lowland rainforest that lines both riverbanks, giving you an eye-level view of wildlife that rarely ventures near roads or hiking trails.
Expect to see: spectacled caimans resting on the riverbanks, howler and capuchin monkeys moving through the canopy overhead, Jesus Christ lizards sprinting across the water’s surface, and an impressive variety of birds including kingfishers, herons, toucans, and roseate spoonbills. Sloths are regularly spotted hanging from riverside trees, and river otters are occasionally seen in the calmer sections. The boat’s slow pace and low profile make it an excellent platform for wildlife photography.
The Peñas Blancas is undeveloped along most of its length, meaning wildlife here is less habituated to human presence. Sightings feel genuinely wild even though the river is a short drive from La Fortuna. This tour is also ideal for travelers who prefer a relaxed pace over hiking you’ll cover more ground with less effort, and the water provides natural shade and cooler temperatures throughout.
Wildlife You May See on a Tour in the Arenal Region
The La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano area is one of the most productive wildlife watching zones in Central America. The convergence of volcanic slopes, lowland rainforest, river corridors, and wetlands supports an exceptional diversity of species within a compact geographic area.
Mammals: Both three-toed and two-toed sloths are reliably seen. All four of Costa Rica’s monkey species are present in the region: howler monkeys (heard before seen), white-faced capuchins, spider monkeys, and the rarer squirrel monkey. Coatis, kinkajous, white-nosed coatis, northern tamanduas, and agoutis are commonly encountered on forest trails. River otters and caimans are regularly seen on the Peñas Blancas.
Birds: The Arenal region supports over 500 bird species. Highlights include the keel-billed toucan, several species of motmot, resplendent quetzal (in higher elevations), roseate spoonbill, great green macaw, and a wide variety of hummingbirds, tanagers, and flycatchers. Serious birders often combine a river safari with an early morning forest walk for the best species count.
Reptiles & Amphibians: The iconic red-eyed tree frog is common in the region, along with poison dart frogs, glass frogs, and dozens of other amphibian species. Spectacled caimans are reliably seen on the Peñas Blancas River. Jesus Christ lizards (basilisks), green iguanas, and a variety of snake species are also present though snakes are rarely encountered on guided tours.
